Day One: Affiliate Marketing

Posted on October 13th, 2007 in Affiliates | 14 Comments »

This post is a part of Courtney Tuttle’s Group Writing Project.

I don’t know a whole lot about affiliate marketing, so let’s say that I’m a newbie at it. With Donovan’s amazing help and Don’s rockin’ helpful hints, I’m learning the business.

It’s not easy and most would have you think. If you’re a newbie like me, then the most important thing to remember is that it takes money to make money. Unfortunately for me, this is not a poor man’s game.

My new site, Webkinz for Christmas, is an affiliate infused website that is geared to try to make some money from the Webkinz craze. Don’t know what webkinz are? Click here. There you can learn about what I had to learn about webkinz pets to get started in this affiliate business.

In starting an affiliate business such as this one, you must first decide on a product to promote. Whether it be toys, magazines, or widgets, you have to know what you’re dealing with. If you don’t know the product, how can you tell people why they should buy it?

So, firstly, I’ve done my research. I know all about webkinz, the codes, the lil’ kinz, and the accessories. I’ve looked at the wikipedia entry and I’ve made my own about page.

Also, I’ve put up the statcounter code on the page so that I can track how many visitors I get and where they come from.

You can see that on the page, the only thing aside from the About page, are affiliate links. This ensures that if people do click on something on the page, I’ll make some money (hopefully).

Next, is how to get the people to come in and click.

Dabbling in the affiliate business

Lately, I’ve been giving it a go with an online affiliate idea. I won’t release the idea to the public just yet, but I will be documenting my progress here, in case you were wondering.

I’ve gotten a new domain and have signed up with several affiliate programs targeted to what I’m attempting to sell online. So far, I haven’t heard anything back from the programs, but it can take a couple of days, from what I understand.

Ebay also has an affiliate program if you are looking to sell anything that’s in the inventory of items that’s being sold through them. How nifty is that?

Basically, I’ve spent ten dollars for the domain name. Everything else is free so far.

A big thank you to Donovan for the ideas and the many MANY helpful hints!

Get everything out of an affiliate program

When affiliate programs are new, it’s hard to know what will make money and what won’t. You could let the pros go in and cash in on the profits because they were the early birds, or you can jump in with feet first and test the water yourself.

I’m jumping in feet first and I want to take you with me. DealDotCom just launched their service today. It’s kind of like Woot! without the funny commentary. It’s still new and no one really knows what kind of money can be made from this opportunity, but why wait until John Chow publishes his monthly earnings report to see what kind of money he has made! Why not get in while it’s early and be the person that can say “I made a ton of cash from this new affiliate program, go check it out.”

I don’t know if I’m going to make a nickel from DealDotCom, that part is true. If you don’t sign up, then you’ll never know, either.

So, what are you waiting for? Jump in, the water’s just fine!
