When I first started blogging, I had the goal of writing about dating websites and making some affiliate cash on the side. Boy, was I in it for the wrong reasons. I was told that you can make money online, but that it’s hard work, and not just a walk in the park. I had to give it a go and link to popular dating sites like Yahoo Personals, Date.com, and Match.com. Did I make any money from doing any of this? Nope.
That’s when I had to re-evaluate why I was writing. I setup Earsucker to write about something that everybody loves, music. Have I made a killing off of that? Nah. What I got and still get from music blogging is a sense of accomplishment and knowing that I’m providing my readers with news on the music that they and I both like.
That wasn’t enough, I still felt like there was something else that I could contribute to the blogosphere. With that in mind, I created this blog. The goal of Earsucker was to promote the music that I care about and be read. The goal of this blog is to share some of the information that I’ve learned along the way.
Do I want to make money from these blogs? I’d be a fool to say no. I blog to be read, though. I love waking up in the mornings and seeing new comments on posts. It makes my day to see that my RSS subscribers keep going up, all the while, my Technorati ranking goes down.
My goal for this blog is to be popular and under the 10k mark for Technorati. Then I can start blogging with the pros. After I achieve that goal, I’m sure my mission will change. Even then, I will respond to all comments and emails, primarily because I’m just like you: A person with a story to tell.
Think about these questions, and let me know what you think:

How will you know when you’ve achieved success in blogging?
